About 4 months ago, I took a few days off to analyze some minor league player stats. I wasn’t looking for players whose value was already high such as Vlad, Royce, Adell etc. Instead, I set my sights on players who fit one of the following 2 criterias.
- Players with an immense amount of potential coming off of a down season. (I landed on Austin Hays, who has since tripled in value since my initial investment).
- Players who were performing, however were not highly touted prospects and were simply not receiving the hype they deserved.
I discovered Edwin Rios. Edwin will be turning 25 years old in just a few weeks, and there is a lot to like here.
First off, did you know that Edwin Rios was named the Dodgers Branch Rickey Minor League position player of the year in 2016? He won that award over a group of better-known farmhands like Cody Bellinger, Alex Verdugo and Willie Calhoun.
Rios is a First Base, Third Base, OF prospect for the Los Angeles Dodgers. While they are a bit crowded at all positions for the moment, it is only a matter of time before his bat forces it’s way into the lineup.
2016 saw Edwin smash 27 home runs while posting a .301 average and .346 OBP across A and AA ball.
2017 saw much of the same as he clubbed 24 home runs while posting a .309 average and .361 OBP.
Last year, his power took a step back due to lack of AB’s (only 10 home runs in 309 AB’s… down 150 AB’s from the year before), however he still maintained a .304 average and a .355 OBP.
This guy can MASH!!! Take a look at his swing here:
This year in spring training he struggled in 35 AB’s with only 1 HR and a .200 batting average, however there is a lot to like here….mostly the price point to enter into his still affordable market.
Bottom line is, he is a great talent that is being over looked in my opinion.
His 2018 Bowman Chrome 1st Auto can be had for $10 including shipping. Wayyyy too cheap.
I have stockpiled my fair share of Rios over the past 120 days, and feel obligated to at least give the heads up to those of you who want to dabble in the card market, but do not wish to do so blindly.
** I just added the black wave 1/1 auto to my collection **
Remember, this is prospecting. Nothing is 100% guaranteed ever. Rios can easily break a leg or become a head case tomorrow, however at his current price he is definitely worth the gamble.
Our goal as always, is to inform and help the hobby to the best of our ability.
Please play responsibly and most of all…. have fun!
Good luck in your upcoming 2019 Bowman breaks wherever you may be breaking!
