1993 SP Derek Jeter Rookie Card. Your Golden Ticket.

What if someone told you that if you gave them $800 right now, they would give you back $1000 in 6 months? Would you take them up on the offer?

What if instead of $1000, they offered you $1200!?

Considering the S&P 500 showed a return of -4.7% last year and +21.83% in 2017, you’d be pretty hard pressed to turn down a gain of 25% or more in only 6 months time.

The next few months present a seldom seen opportunity in the hobby.  No one likes to use the words: sure thing, lock, guarantee etc., however that is exactly what has been placed before us with the 1993 SP Derek Jeter rookie card.

In early 2020, Derek Jeter will become a first ballot Hall Of Famer.  #Fact

No, that’s not because Tony from Sal’s meats in Staten Island thinks so… it’s because he has put up one of the most magical careers in baseball history. (Notice I replaced the word statistical with magical).

While no particular career stat will ever jump off the page (aside from his almost 3500 hits), his body of work is much deeper than mere numbers.

He provided all of baseball with some of the most famous plays in recent memory that are entrenched in our minds forever.

His 2001 ALDS play in Oakland made it into a Gatorade commercial.  His July 1st 2004 dive play against the rival Red Sox made it onto more walls than paint.

He helped bring 5 World Series Championships home to the Bronx.

There are only 3 things that are guaranteed in your lifetime.

  1. Death
  2. Taxes
  3. The appreciation of the 1993 SP Derek Jeter rookie card in 2019.

Basically, the only reason why the 1993 SP Derek Jeter rookie card may not appreciate (or even decline in value) in 2019 is that we find out that Derek had a secret room in Michael’s Neverland Ranch.

Let’s dive into the numbers shall we?

The only 2 cards of recent memory that fit a similar mold to the 1993 SP Derek Jeter rookie card are…

  1. 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr.
  2. 1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera

You could make an argument that the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. card is the most iconic baseball card of our generation. That is why I feel this is the most comparable card to the 1993 SP Derek Jeter Rookie Card.

Below is a chart tracking the growth performance of a PSA 9 MINT 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card prior to his HOF announcement, all the way through his induction into the baseball hall of fame.

This card was trading at or below $50 in late 2015. January 2016 saw the card jump up almost 50% with some sales reaching close to $100. After leveling off in the $65 range (30% ROI), it shot up once again in late July as he was inducted into the HOF. The smart play looking back was to dump it after his call to the hall, as that would have netted you a short term gain of 80%.

3 years later, the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. Rookie Card PSA 9 MINT trades around $70. That is a 40% ROI from late October 2015.

The 1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera baseball card is a bit of a different beast.

This is one ugly card. Mariano looks like he has a better chance of finishing his career with 3 Masters victories than being the all time saves leader on this card.

Below is a chart tracking the growth performance of a PSA 9 1992 Bowman Mariano Rivera rookie card from March 2018 through January 2019 (when Mariano received his call to the hall.

You will notice that this card was trading is the $60 range for the first half of 2018. Then in September, it began creeping up slowly as the savvy collectors/investors started anticipating his call to the hall.

Fast forward to January 2019 and BOOM! This card is trading on average for $120! (100% ROI in under a year).

Why? I personally think it’s because New Yorkers will spend money on their players, and those who did not have the foresight to buy early, had no problems paying up to own the hottest card of the day.

Now don’t get it twisted. Most rookie cards will see a SLIGHT bump after their call to the hall and inductions, but nothing like the 2 cards we mentioned above.

1993 SP Derek Jeter Rookie Card PSA 8

The 1993 SP Derek Jeter rookie card however, is another exception to the rule.

Below you can find a growth performance chart for the PSA 8 1993 SP Derek Jeter Rookie Card over the past year.

This card has gone from $250 in March 2018 to almost $450 in March 2019 (ROI of over 50%), and he has not even received his call to the hall! SAY WHAT!?!

It has outperformed our other previous examples, and we are still just under a year away from him getting the call.

Do not be scared off by it’s current price! It’s only going to go up.

Final Words:

It is rare that an opportunity like this presents itself in the hobby.

This card is going to continue to rise in the next 8 months and possibly BOOM next January. Buy whatever grade you can afford at this point and tuck it away for 6-8 months. TAKE ADVANTAGE.

We did not write this article to help sell our Jeters (heck, we already sold most of them like idiots). No, we wrote this to help YOU the collector. Maybe you weren’t thinking this far ahead, or maybe you were too scared to put your money where your mouth is. It is our hope that this blog helped give you the nudge you needed to make a play on this card and win big in the short term.
